Demonstration Projects

Demonstration projects are real-world examples of how managers have integrated climate considerations into forest management planning and activities. These projects use the partnerships and resources developed through the Framework to test new ideas and actions for responding to changing conditions. Demonstrations come in all shapes and sizes, showing a variety of adaptation actions that also achieve forest management goals.

Demonstration projects help achieve the intent of the Climate Change Response Framework to support “climate smart” conservation and forest management by testing new ideas and actions, building partnerships, and providing information that can feed into future activities. They engage land owners, forest managers, and the science community in discussion of the potential effects of climate change and solutions to those impacts. Demonstration projects are essential in helping land managers to gain experience in working on climate change issues by focusing on a specific location and set of management issues. The broader ideas and lessons learned can later be used to inform management on a broader scale.

A network of demonstration projects is under development. These projects will engage a variety of land owners, forest managers, and other stakeholders by focusing in a particular location. These groups will identify adaptation actions that will enhance the ability of forests in that place to cope with change and sustain ecological functions and key services. Currently, demonstration projects are in development in the Northwoods (link to Northwoods demo page). Additional demonstration projects will be initiated in other areas after vulnerability assessments and adaptation resources are developed.

  • The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is using forest management to improve the condition of ash forests and reduce risks in anticipation of the invasive emerald ash borer beetle.

  • Paul Smith’s College is interested in how its 12,000-acre forest may be affected by climate change and how forest management can enhance its ability to adapt.

  • Staff from the Forestry Division of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation used the Adaptation Workbook to consider climate change risks and management opportunities for timber sale on 42 acres of state forest land.

  • Staff from the Management Forestry Program of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation used the Adaptation Workbook to consider climate change risks and management opportunities for a timber sale on approximately 101 acres of state forest land.

  • The Sherwin Institute for Woodland Management provides educational opportunities for owners of property from small urban lots to rural woodlots of 10-15 acres to increase their knowledge of how to properly care for, manage, and utilize their trees for environmental, ecological, social, and economic benefits. The Institute’s programs and facilities promote the beauty and importance of trees and other woody plants to create vibrant green communities and native forests within the Great Lakes region.

  • Staff from the Minnesota DNR used the Adaptation Workbook to refine ideas for post-fire salvage and restoration treatments following a recent wildfire.

  • Mississippi Park Connection and the National Park Service are leading a project that coordinates volunteers to work on a gravel bed tree nursery project at the Science Museum of Minnesota’s St. Paul, MN, campus. The gravel bed nursery will feature trees that are adapted to climate change conditions in the Twin Cities, and will eventually be planted in St. Paul along the Mississippi River.

  • The Village of Riverside is a National Historic Landmark due to its landscape design, created by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1869. The residents of the community value its landscape and urban tree canopy. The Emerald Ash Borer infestation has cause a significant increase in tree mortality throughout the Village. A reforestation program has been implemented to replace 11% canopy loss that will anticipate the potential impacts of climate change in addition to other challenges associated with our urban environment.

  • Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources staff used the Adaptation Workbook to consider strategic responses to climate change across a complex, 65,000-acre Management Area of state-owned land.
