Mid-Atlantic Demonstration Projects

Demonstration projects are real-world examples of how managers have integrated climate considerations into forest management planning and activities. These projects use the partnerships and resources developed through the Framework project to test new ideas and actions for responding to changing conditions. Demonstrations come in all shapes and sizes, showing a variety of adaptation actions that also achieve forest management goals.

In developing a demonstration projects, natural resource managers use vulnerability assessments and Forest Adaptation Resources to identify actions that will enhance the ability of forests to cope with change and sustain ecological functions and key services. The actions are selected by the land owners and managers to help them achieve their management goals, and these actions are then implemented and monitored for their effectiveness.

Multiple demonstration projects are in development to address a variety of issues related to a changing climate. Contact Patricia Butler if you'd like assistance in developing your own demonstration project.

  • Warmer, shorter winters are reducing the winter logging season, and over time, it is likely that more logging will need to occur in the summer under less favorable conditions. The Vermont Land Trust harvested one area in summer to better understand how warmer winter conditions could affect logging operations and costs.

  • Expansive forests of large maple, oak, and birch trees are prized across the Northwoods for many reasons, including their beauty, their diversity, and their ability to provide valuable wood. Unfortunately, forests pests and disease pose increasingly large threats for these and other forests in the region. On the Menominee Indian Reservation in northern Wisconsin, foresters are working to respond to oak wilt and other threats, while also creating forests that will be better adapted to future conditions.

  • The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin has developed several real-world examples of how climate change can be incorporated into sustainable forest and natural resource management. Through this project, the Chequamegon-Nicolet has taken a special look at the resources of the Twentymile Creek and Marengo River watersheds in order to show how natural resource management actions can enhance the ability of ecosystems to cope with changing conditions while meeting a variety of management goals.

  • The Nature Conservancy is coordinating this project, in collaboration with NIACS, University of Minnesota-Duluth, and other organizations. The project is being implemented on approximately 2,000 acres of forestland in northeastern Minnesota, on a mix of federal, state, and county land. Project partners are creating examples of climate change adaptation that feature a combination of management practices and planting to increase ecosystem complexity. This project has been supported by a grant from the Wildlife Conservation Society and its Climate Adaptation Fund. The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation supported the establishment of the Climate Adaptation Fund.
